Alex the Apprentice is off to India

Alex the Apprentice is off to India

On March 1st, Alex Pike (seen here (above) getting stuck in RuckinRugby style for Tiverton v Hayle) started with RuckinRugby as an Apprentice Website Designer through Yeovil College and although it is a far cry from what anyone might describe as a traditional apprenticeship, he has already learned a lot about website design and contributed a lot to the company. He only spends maybe a day a week in the office and we get together for a coffee and a catch up once a week too – time permitting. But Alex is young and he is ‘involved’ in rugby, he is playing it right now for Tiverton Chiefs and Devon Seniors, so his most important contribution to the company is his perspective – and you cannot underestimate the affect an alternative perspective can have on a small company.

KISS U13 Girls winning at Allianz Park in 2014

In 2009 I went to India and it changed my life. I went to the KISS in Bhubaneshwar and met Paul Walsh and The Jungle Crows RFC in Calcutta, leading of course to my friendship with Tudu, Zaffar, Roshan and beyond. Friends for life and reminders of what India did for me in just 2 weeks.

So, I have decided that as part of his apprenticeship Alex should go to India too and I’m happy to say he jumped at the chance … who wouldn’t? Alex will travel on May 23rd and spend a whole month with the Jungle Crows, visiting the KISS (Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences) and many places that I have never been. The trip will culminate in the Calcutta 7s and a chance to play for the Jungle Crows!

Alex will be keeping a diary whilst he is there and posting it here on the website with lots of photos, we hope. Hopefully he will return inspired as we head into the silly season where we start refreshing all our club websites so they are looking good for the new season.

Alex and I went to Allianz Park recently to watch the KISS U13 Girls win an International tournament unbeaten, so he is already aware of how seriously they take their rugby in India!

RuckinRugby are preparing for an extremely exciting and busy season in 2014/15 with new clubs in the Middle East, a possible UK County Rugby Project and what we hope will soon become the best online resource for the Women’s Premiership Rugby scene. Alex will be at the very heart of this and more, and we look forward to having him here for the 2 years of his apprenticeship.

Yours in Rugby,

Max.
